General Description / Special Programs

The Department of Anthropology at UBC advances the study and constructive understanding of human diversity and commonality across the globe and throughout the long span of human existence. We pursue this aim through excellence in research, teaching, and community collaboration, grounded in multiple analytical and interpretive methods that share a commitment to field-based inquiry. The Department has particular strengths in anthropological archaeology in the Americas and China, collaborative research with Aboriginal peoples in Canada and globally, and critical museology.

Major in Anthropology - A total of 42 credits (but no more than 60 credits) within Anthropology, at least 30 credits of which must be numbered 300 or higher. All students considering the Major in Anthropology are encouraged to meet with the Anthropology undergraduate advisor prior to enrolling in the program and periodically during their third and fourth years. At least 18 of these credits must be at the 300-level or above. Minor in Anthropological Archaeology - At least 30 credits (but no more than 42 credits) in anthropological archaeology, including ARCL 103 or 140, 203 or 204, and 305, plus 3 credits in applied research methods (ARCL 306, 405, 406, 424, 425, 430, ANTH 418, 433, 495). At least 18 credits must be at the 300-level or above. Honours in Anthropology - A total of 60 credits (but not more than 72 credits) in anthropology, at least 48 of which must be numbered 300 or higher. All students considering the Honours program in Anthropology are encouraged to seek advising with the Anthropology undergraduate advisor prior to enrolling in the program and periodically during their third and fourth years. Grants Or Funding The University of British Columbia offers a range of scholarships, bursaries, and employment funding opportunities for graduate students. These include a doctoral tuition award in support of four years of PhD studies; University Graduate Fellowships; and teaching assistantships. The Faculty of Postdoctoral and Graduate Studies is responsible for merit-based graduate awards. Graduate Awards manages a number of award competitions each year and administers payment of both internally- and externally-funded awards. Support Opportunities <p>Graduate Student Support Available. A number of teaching assistantships and stipend: approximately 23 full-year TA positions. Graduate Support Initiative: Approximately $210,000 allocated to incoming students. UBC Affiliated Fellowships are available on a competitive basis to qualified current and prospective full-time Anthropology students - up to $30,000 is the range allocated. International Partial Tuition Scholarship: up to $3,200.00 per year from international students (for students paying a tuition of $7,200 a year) SSHRC: Successful candidates receive up to (PhD) $35,000 per annum for 3 years or $20,000 per annum for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months; (MA) $17,500 for 12 months. UBC Doctoral Fellowships: $20,000 per annum for up to four years. Research Facilities <p><strong>The Laboratory of Archaeology (LOA) </strong>is committed to the scholarly study of the material evidence of past cultures. LOA recognizes the rights of Indigenous peoples and is committed to dealing sensitively and responsibly with Indigenous peoples on the care and disposition of these materials.&nbsp; Laboratory of Archaeology, with research space, archaeological research collections, Archaeology Reading Room, Museum of Anthropology, Ethnographic Film Unit, Research Computing Laboratory (Graduate and Undergraduate).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Digital &amp; Virtual Media Lab</strong></p> <p>The Digital and Virtual Media Lab (DVML) is a space for faculty, students, and partners to develop new projects and pursue new media ventures.</p> <p>As an emerging space, the DVML has a key partnership with the <a href="https://anthfilm.anth.ubc.ca/">Ethnographic Film Unit</a>, and welcomes additional partnerships as well. The DVML aims to support wide-ranging and innovative collaboration in the realm of digital and virtual media production.</p>

Anthropology Graduate Student Association (AGSA) https://anth.ubc.ca/graduate/opportunities/ The Anthropology Graduate Student Association (AGSA) is a student collective responsible for managing student affairs, organizing social activities, and articulating graduate students’ interests to the department and the university as a whole. The AGSA appoints representatives as voting members on several department and campus committees, and liaises with other organizations on campus. A new group of student representatives are elected each year.
