General Description / Special Programs

Through this field school you will learn ethnographic theory and methods and gain experience through various internships while immersed in Bulgarian languages and cultures. The field school and internships are run through a study abroad program through which students can take one or two courses, which can be completed through a combination of pre-departure online coursework, followed by either a 2-week or 4-week program in-country in Bulgaria.

Courses Offered in 2020

  • Anthropology 440: Ethnographic Field School (3 or 6 units)
  • Anthropology 490: Special Topics in Anthropology (3 or 6 units)
  • Anthropology 307: Modernization in Global Perspective (3 units)

Internships are available, regardless of courses chosen; however, an internship course (3 units) is also being planned for summer 2020. Courses are available for graduate and undergraduate level students. Additional classes may also be added based on student interest.

This field school is run through a collaboration between California State University, Long Beach and nonprofit organization Stone and Compass. Founded in 2014, Stone & Compass offers tours and programs that seek to connect, educate, and inspire young people and adults from across the globe, supporting sustainable cultural entrepreneurship projects, global partnerships, and projects that aim to build a vibrant future full of hope, financial security, peace, and happiness.
