General Description / Special Programs
Emphases: sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology. Sociocultural foci include culture and political economy, cultural production, ecology, migration and mobility, global political economy, gender and development, human rights, indigenous politics, health care, media, ethnoarchaeology, kinship, nationalism, education, youth culture, conflict, and applied anthropology in Aboriginal Canada, South America, India, China, eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. Archaeology foci include mortuary archaeology, environmental archaeology, settlement patterns, zooarchaeology, domestication, lithics, ceramics, and historic and fur trade archaeology in Canada (especially Manitoba and British Columbia), Europe (especially Eastern Europe), the Near East, South Africa, and the Arctic. Biological anthropology foci include skeletal biology, demography, medical anthropology, historical epidemiology, and anthropology of disease and health.

Anthony Arnhold Graduate Fellowship in Anthropology; Dr. Emoke Szathmary Graduate Fellowship in Biological Anthropology; C Thomas Shay Scholarship; Kent and Karen Fowler Scholarship in Anthropology, Dianne Grant Memorial Scholarship; Joan F de Pena Prize; Pamela Mason Memorial Fellowship. Some departmental funds are available to support student research and travel.
Program Details
Research Facilities The Anthropology Laboratories, including the Bioanthropology Digital Image Analysis Laboratory, the C T Shay Palaeobotanical Collection, and the Zooarchaeology Comparative Collection, permit advanced study and research in osteology, archaeology, zooarchaeology, lithic and botanical analysis. The Provincial Archives include the Archives of the Hudson's Bay Company.
