Research Facilities

Facilities for Visiting Scholars: Most anthropological collections and other materials accessible by appointment to scholars and qualified students. Programs: changing exhibits and public program schedule.

Collections Over 630,000 catalogued entries in the collections, with a total of 3.8 million individual items. Major research and study collections include California archeology and ethnography (259,000); North American archeology and ethnography (61,000); Middle and South American archeology (51,000); Oceanic archeology and ethnography (45,000); Ancient Mediterranean (9000); Ancient Egyptian (23,000); African archeology and ethnography (16,000); Human skeletal (11,000); Photographic negatives, prints and slides (25,000). Library Resources Anthropology Library housed in the same building as the Hearst Museum with approximately 30,000 volumes available for loan or library use.
