General Description / Special Programs
The department integrates anthropology, geography, and sociology for an innovative, interdisciplinary social science program. We are thus able to provide discipline-based training while simultaneously allowing students to transcend disciplinary boundaries and benefit from cross-disciplinary exchanges. Our degree programs offer students rigorous training in transdisciplinary social theory and research methods, including quantitative and qualitative analysis, ethnography, and GIS. Our faculty is recognized for its research and teaching in: political ecology; migrations and diasporas; globalization and transnationalism; medical anthropology; and critical studies of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and nationality. Faculty have regional expertise in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and East Asia.
