Yale University’s Department of Anthropology was officially founded in 1937 and traces its origins of research and teaching to work done within the Peabody Museum of Natural History (1866) and the Institute of Human Relations (1928). The Department is home to over 30 faculty and nearly 120 graduate students and undergraduate majors.

Prerequisite: None; Number of courses: Twelve term courses (including senior essay) Distribution of courses: At least one intro survey or intermediate course in each of three subfields of anthropology: three advanced seminars or advanced courses (not including Anth 471a, 472b, 491a or b); up to three cognate courses in other departments or programs with approval of the DUS. Senior requirements: Senior essay (Anth 491a or b) or based on an advanced seminar taken in the student's senior year.

MA/ MS Requirements Requirements for MA in Anthropology: This degree is intended for the student not continuing in the PhD program. Requirement is satisfactory completion of at least one year in that program. Special attention is given to the quality of papers submitted in course work. Applications for a terminal master's degree are not accepted. Requirements for MPhil in Anthropology: The academic requirements are the same as for the PhD except for submission of a prospectus on field paper and the writing of a dissertation.

Phd Requirements Two years course work (twelve term courses); language proficiency as appropriate; qualifying examinations: Archaeology and Biological Anthropology-two hours oral, eight hours written; Sociocultural Anthropology: one hour oral, five hours written; third-year field paper; Archaeology and Biological Anthropology dissertation prospectus; dissertation project, which typically is based on fieldwork; writing and submission of dissertation.
Phd Specializations Fields of Study: The department has three subfields. Archaeology focuses on ritual complexes and writing, ceramic analysis, warfare, ancient civilizations, origins of agriculture and museum studies. Sociocultural and Linguistic Anthropology focuses on ethnography and social theory, religion, myth and ritual, historical anthropology, culture and political economy, agrarian studies, ecology, environmental and social change, medical anthropology, emotions, public health, gender, postcolonial development, ethnicity, identity politics and diaspora, urban anthropology, global mass culture, alternate modernity, language, nationalism, and ideology, structuralism and semiotics, feminist discourse. Biological Anthropology focuses on paleoanthropology, evolutionary theory, human functional anatomy, race and human biological diversity, genetics, primate ecology.
