Students must complete the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences and the following required courses (a minimum of 30 credit hours in anthropology, 18 of which must be upper division, is required for the degree): Anth 2010, Introduction to Physical Anthropology 1; Anth 2100, Frontiers of Cultural Anthropology; Anth 2200, Introduction to Archaeology; one upper-division topical course in cultural anthropology; one upper-division course in archaeology; one upper-division course in physical anthropology.

Phd Requirements
An MA in anthropology is not required for admission to the PhD program. Applicants to the PhD program should have a solid background in anthropology or a closely related discipline and should demonstrate familiarity with the theories and methods of anthropology. Applicants who have a master's degree in anthropology or a closely related discipline may be eligible for transferring up to 21 credits. ARCHAEOLOGY: 42 credits of coursework with 21 beyond the MA for students with an external MA degree and 12 credits beyond the MA with a UCB anthropology MA, 30 credits of dissertation hours, ANTH 7840 research paper (for students entering without an MA in anthropology), Ph.D. qualifying examination, Ph.D. prospectus, dissertation and dissertation defense. BIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY: 42 credits of coursework with 21 beyond the MA for students with an external MA degree and 12 credits beyond the MA with a UCB anthropology MA, 30 credits of dissertation hours, Ph.D. qualifying exam, Ph.D. prospectus, dissertation and dissertation defense. Graduate part-time instructorships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships are available to qualified applicants; University Fellowships and other fellowships are awarded to highly qualified applicants each year. Students who qualify for federal work-study assistance are employed as proctors in the department reading room and other miscellaneous jobs.
